GM3 Ceramide plays a key role in hearing and is highly important for cochlear hair cells. It plays a major role in cell-to-cell communication, cell adhesion, and for neuronal function. It also has been found to reduce the motility of cancer cells for patients suffering from ovarian and stomach cancer. By changing the chain length of the fatty acid portion of this globoside, it changes its membrane packing ability, signal transduction, and nanodomain formation.
