Sphingosines
Sphingosine is produced in the sphingolipid metabolic pathway via the interaction between ceramide and ceramidase. Sphingosine is then converted to other metabolites in the pathway such as sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) by sphingosine kinase. Ultimately, S1P can be converted back to sphingosine via S1P phosphatase or irreversibly degraded by S1P lyase to ethanolamine phosphate and hexadecanal. Sphingosine is viewed as a key intermediate in the metabolic process of sphingolipids. Its S1P metabolite is responsible for several functions including “inside-out” signaling or intracellular signaling of various physiological and pathophysiological processes.
