Sphingomyelin
Sphingomyelin (SM) is the most abundant sphingolipid found in eukaryotes and is a major component of cell membranes. Increased amounts of SM are found in the central nervous system (CNS) especially in the myelin sheath surrounding neuronal axons. SM has been linked to roles in cell processes, regulation of inflammatory responses, and signal transduction. Due to its increased abundance in the CNS and neuronal networks, SM may also play an important role in brain development and cognitive development. SM is also present in breast milk and while little is known about its function, a recent study indicated that it does play a significant role in infant nutrition. Avanti offers natural sphingomyelin from sources such as chicken egg, porcine brain, and bovine milk, as well as many synthetic derivatives.
