GB3 globosides are a key component of the cell membrane and play a key role apoptosis. It is also present in large amounts in the kidneys within individuals that suffer from Fabry's disease. By changing the chain length of the fatty acid portion of this globoside, it changes its membrane packing ability, signal transduction, and nanodomain formation.
