Glyco-3β,5α,6β-Trihydroxycholanoic Acid is a conjugated bile acid (BA) that has a role of a human metabolite.
The bio compound is a derivative of the BA cholanoic acid (cholanic acid / cholan-24-oic acid) that bears hydroxy substituents at positions 3, 5, and 6. It’s a glyco-conjugate of cholanic acid - it is formed in the process of conjugation of cholanoic acid with the nonessential amino acid glycine. As a result, the detergent Glyco-3β,5α,6β-Trihydroxycholanoic Acid that is synthesized is ionized and water-soluble compared to the starting compounds.
As with all BAs, Glyco-3β,5α,6β-Trihydroxycholanoic Acid has a variety of important effects on the human body. All BAs emulsify fats and other sterols and thus enhance their digestion and absorption in the small intestine. It has also been proven that they act as signaling molecules for key enzyme-activated biological reactions and processes, involving cholesterol, glucose, energy, other BAs, and drug metabolism. However, when present at high concentrations, BAs manifest potent cytotoxic properties.
Glyco-3β,5α,6β-Trihydroxycholanoic Acid is successfully implemented in research. It finds wide applications in numerous and diverse studies investigating BAs and their derivatives’ roles and abilities in both healthy organisms and those with metabolic disorders.
