Oxidized Lipids
Avanti offers several fatty acid-modified phosphatidylcholine (PC) derivatives. These modified PC’s have an oxidized fatty acid chain. These oxidized PC’s are also within the oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) particle class which has recently been defined as “A particle derived from circulating LDL that may have peroxides or their degradation products generated within the LDL molecule or elsewhere in the body associated with the particle”. OxLDL’s have been studied for several decades and have been linked to pro-and anti-atherogenic properties. The modification of oxLDL’s occurs in the body when polyunsaturated fatty acid(PUFA)-containing phospholipids are oxidized to oxidized phospholipids. Various oxidized phosphatidylcholine species have been identified in oxLDL mixtures using mass spectrometry. Cellular roles reportedly linked to oxidized PC species include interleukin transcription, phenotype switching, and apoptotic mechanisms. An increase in oxidized phospholipid concentration has been implicated in coronary artery disease and the progression of atherosclerosis.
