Lipid Oxidation Products

Lipid peroxidation is considered to be the main molecular mechanism causing damage to cell structures and in toxicity processes leading to cell death. This mechanism involves the formation and propagation of lipid radicals, the uptake of oxygen, rearrangement of double bonds in unsaturated lipids, and the eventual destruction of membrane lipids. The breakdown products of the peroxidation mechanism are alcohols, ketones, alkanes, aldehydes, and ethers. Membrane fluidity is decreased due to lipid peroxidation and many lipid peroxidation products inhibit protein synthesis, blood macrophage actions, and alter chemotactic signals and enzyme activity. Oxidative stress has been implicated in many disease processes including inflammation, degenerative diseases, and tumor formation.
