Glycochenodeoxycholic acid-d4
5ß-cholanic acid-3α,7α-diol N-(carboxymethyl)-amide-d4
Glycochenodeoxycholic Acid-d4 is the deuterium-labeled glycine conjugated form of the bile acid (BA) glycochenodeoxycholic acid. A deuterated compound is one in which a hydrogen atom is replaced by a deuterium atom. Deuterium is a stable, heavier isotope of hydrogen.
Glycochenodeoxycholic acid, also known as Chenodeoxycholylglycine and Glycine Chenodeoxycholate, is a derivative of the primary BA chenodeoxycholic acid—a major bile metabolite used most commonly for cholesterol and gallstone dissolution.
Glycochenodeoxycholic acid’s main role is to solubilize fats and other sterol compounds for absorption. Other roles and properties of the compound have also been discovered.
It is reported to be an indicator and diagnostic marker of hepatocellular carcinoma. Its presence, as well as its level of abundance, are indicative of the prognosis of the disease.
Glycochenodeoxycholic acid is found to trigger the P13 kinase/Akt signaling pathway in Barrett-type adenocarcinoma cells. This pathway prompts proliferation and inhibits apoptosis of the cells. It’s the mechanism whereby bile reflux is responsible for the emergence of esophageal cancer and its progression.
It’s also known that glycochenodeoxycholic acid prevents the formation of cholic acid (the other primary BA, besides chenodeoxycholic acid).
The conjugate is reduced in the serum of rats with obesity, induced by a high-fat diet.
There have been analyses exploring how glycochenodeoxycholic acid levels change following bariatric surgery. The results show that the compound concentrations are elevated in patients with gastric bypass in comparison with overweight and obese patients.
Glycochenodeoxycholic Acid-d4 can primarily be used as an internal standard for the quantification of glycochenodeoxycholic acid.
