Lithocholic acid-d4
5β-cholanic acid-3α-ol (2,2,4,4-d4)
Lithocholic Acid-d4 is a deuterium-labeled version of the bile acid (BA) lithocholic acid. Four hydrogen atoms have been strategically replaced with deuterium atoms.
Lithocholic acid is a toxic secondary BA. It’s found in humans and mice, and has a role as a geroprotector. Lithocholic acid is produced in the colon from chenodeoxycholic acid by bacterial action. As with most BAs, it undergoes a process of conjugation with the amino acids glycine or taurine and forms glycolithocholic acid or taurolithocholic acid, respectively.
Lithocholic acid, present at high concentrations, is shown to cause cholestasis and cholestatic liver damage in rodent models. Yet, it serves as a detergent to solubilize fats for absorption.
Lithocholic acid has been proven to activate the vitamin D receptor, but it doesn’t raise calcium levels as much as vitamin D itself. It also triggers the pregnane X receptor.
The metabolite is also shown to have anti-aging abilities.
Studies have also found that it accumulates in mitochondrial membranes, inhibiting or promoting various enzymes, therefore changing mitochondrial lipid composition.
Lithocholic acid is known to be involved in carcinogenesis. In normal colonic epithelium, it promotes apoptosis. However, it suppresses apoptosis in pre-malignant colonic epithelium in the presence of carcinogens.
Lithocholic Acid-d4 is intended for use as an internal standard for the quantification of lithocholic acid.
Avanti Research provides quality Lithocholic Acid-d4 for your research purposes.
