Eicosanoids
Eicosanoids are defined as bioactive oxygenated polyunsaturated fatty acids containing twenty carbons derived from the oxidation of arachidonic acid and related polyunsaturated fatty acids by cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases, cytochrome P450s, or non-enyzmatic free-radical mechanisms [1,2]. Although traditionally viewed as only pro-inflammatory signaling molecules, unique eicosanoids are now emerging as anti-inflammatory and pro-resolution mediators [1,2]. The ever-advancing field of lipidomics brings the ability to simultaneously measure multiple eicosanoid species, as well as identify novel bioactive eicosanoids [1-3]. Through the combined efforts of lipidomic and cellular biology techniques, the ability to determine the pro-inflammatory, anti-inflammatory, and/or pro-resolution contribution of eicosanoids to specific diseases is promising and provides a basis for the continued understanding of the role of these bioactive lipids in mediating health and disease and improving therapeutic design [1-3]. With unparalleled purity, Avanti’s eicosanoids are ready to ignite your inflammation research!
