Glycosylated Lipids
Glycolipids are primarily found on the extracellular surface of cells in organisms ranging from bacteria to humans. Glycosylation of a lipid occurs when the lipid reacts with a carbohydrate molecule at its hydroxyl or amine functional group to form an O- or N- glycosidic linkage. Glycolipids are involved in several biological processes including cell adhesion and the initiation of cell signaling.
