Trioctanoin
1,2,3-trioctanoylglycerol
Trioctanoin is also known as 1,2,3-trioctanoylglycerol, glyceryl trioctanoate, tricaprylin, and trioctanoyl glycerol. It is a triacylglycerol that contains octanoic acid at the sn-1, sn-2, and sn-3 positions.
Applications
Some labeled forms of trioctanoin play crucial roles in research into moderate Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy. For example, trioctanoin (1,1,1-13c3) is a plant metabolite utilized as an anticonvulsant for pharmaceutical and clinical research.
Trioctanoin has been used to increase hepatic and adipose tissue enzyme activities, including glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), citrate cleavage enzyme (CCE), and malic enzyme activities in rats when administered through their diet. This shows potential applications for metabolism and energy utilization studies. It has also been leveraged in medical nutrition therapy as an energy source for burn patients and individuals who have difficulty digesting long-chain fatty acids. This is due to its ability to provide a readily available energy substrate.
Additionally, trioctanoin shows promise in cancer research. It can induce nuclear edema and cytolysis in tumor cells while bypassing normal hepatic cells in murine hepatic carcinoma models.
Other applications include cosmetic use as a skin-conditioning agent.
