GM1 Ceramide is a ganglioside that is very abundant within the brain. It plays key roles in brain function, such as for memory and cognition, and protects the brain from injury or degeneration. GM1 is also an intestinal receptor for various toxins within the intestines. By changing the chain length of the fatty acid portion of this ganglioside, it changes its membrane packing ability, signal transduction, and nanodomain formation.
