Plant Sterol

Sitostanol is a plant sterol that belongs to the same family as campesterol and beta-sitosterol. It is a saturated plant sterol and is structurally similar to dietary cholesterol, differing only in the side-chain structure. Sitostanol is among the most common cholesterol-lowering agents and is naturally found in various plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils.

Sitostanol stands out as a versatile compound with various applications, making it a valuable asset in scientific research. Its suitability for micelle preparation in cell culture and cellular uptake studies opens doors for exploring cellular processes. Additionally, researchers can leverage sitostanol in cell culture experiments to investigate its impact on inducing a T-helper-1 shift in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from asthma patients.

Sterol Applications

Beyond cellular studies, sitostanol plays a crucial role in diverse applications, including its use in preparing binary phospholipids for thermodynamic studies and Brewster angle microscopy investigations. Furthermore, it serves as a standard steroid in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), enhancing its utility in analytical techniques.

One of the notable characteristics of sitostanol is its cholesterol-lowering efficacy. Similar to other plant sterols, sitostanol competes with cholesterol absorption efficiency and works toward inhibiting cholesterol absorption. It is particularly effective in lowering levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), commonly known as "bad" cholesterol common in diets high in saturated fatty acids. HDL cholesterol is high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and colloquially known as the "good" cholesterol, often derived from diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Total and LDL cholesterol will differ—total takes into account both good and bad cholesterol. A high HDL cholesterol number lowers the risk of coronary heart disease.

Due to its cholesterol-reduction effect, sitostanol is often used in functional foods and dietary supplements designed to promote heart health as part of a cholesterol-lowering diet. Products enriched with sitostanol are available in various forms including margarines (ex: dietary sitostanol ester margarine), spreads, and nutritional supplements. Sitostanol, especially fat-dissolved plant stanol esters, can be taken as a dietary plant sterol, which can decrease serum total and LDL cholesterol as levels reflect cholesterol absorption.

In one study, the replacement of a portion of daily fat intake with sitostanol-ester margarine proved to be effective in lowering serum total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in a mildly hypercholesterolemic population.

Its relevance extends to conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), where the sitostanol-to-cholesterol ratio is implicated and correlates with liver steatosis and inflammation. In the realm of health effects, sitostanol emerges as a hypocholesterolemic agent, impacting micellar solubility and cholesterol absorption. Its influence extends to lowering intestinal cholesterol absorption and reducing serum cholesterol concentration, showcasing its potential as a valuable component in research and potentially as a therapeutic agent in managing cholesterol-related conditions like moderate hypercholesterolemia.

Sitostanol is available in powder form 5mg packaging from Avanti Research.
