Tauroursodeoxycholic Acid-d4 is an isotope-labeled compound, a deuterated form of tauroursodeoxycholic acid. A deuterium atom has replaced a hydrogen atom in this compound resulting in Tauroursodeoxycholic Acid-d4. Deuterium is a heavy and stable isotope of hydrogen.
Tauroursodeoxycholic acid, TUDCA, is a bile acid (BA) and a naturally occurring human metabolite with numerous roles in the organism, despite the fact it’s present in small quantities. The compound is proven to be an anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, and bone density conservation agent.
It’s obtained through a process of conjugation between the secondary BA ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA/ursodiol) and the amino acid taurine. The conjugate is usually derived as the sodium salt. It’s also known as ursodeoxycholyltaurine and tauroursodeoxycholate.
The taurine derivative shows potent abilities as an apoptosis inhibitor. It’s found to significantly decrease the expression of apoptosis molecules like caspase-3 and caspase-12. Studies have also discovered that TUDCA prevents apoptosis in rodent models of Huntington’s disease, tauopathy, retinal disorders, and ischemic brain injury.
Tauroursodeoxycholic acid also protects mitochondria from different cellular elements, such as the protein Bax (an apoptosis regulator), that can interfere with energy production.
The conjugate is relevant to some of the other cellular organelles. It acts as an endoplasmic reticulum stress inhibitor.
More studies have investigated TUDCA as a molecule that inhibits extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs) - signaling molecules, involved in the regulation of mitosis and meiosis.
The isotope compound Tauroursodeoxycholic Acid-4 is intended for use as an internal standard for the quantification of tauroursodeoxycholic acid.
