Taurodeoxycholic acid-d4, sodium salt
5ß-cholanic (2,2,4,4-d4) acid-3α,12α-diol N-(2-sulphoethyl)-amide, sodium salt
Taurodeoxycholic Acid-d4 is the deuterated form of the compound Taurodeoxycholic acid. It carries a deuterium atom instead of hydrogen. Deuterium is a heavy and stable isotope of hydrogen.
Taurodeoxycholic acid, also referred to as Deoxycholyltaurine, is a bile acid (BA)-taurine conjugate, obtained from the secondary BA deoxycholic acid and the amino acid taurine. It occurs as a sodium salt. The compound has a role as a metabolite in the human body. Taurodeoxycholic acid has two isomers: taurochenodeoxycholic acid and tauroursodeoxycholic acid. They all share the same molecular formula and weight.
The taurine derivative is known to be a cholagogue: It aids bile secretion from the gallbladder, and a choleretic. It increases the amount of bile that’s secreted. It’s also a fat emulsifier.
Under certain conditions, taurodeoxycholic acid can demonstrate potent toxicity. Preclinical studies on rat models show evidence that the compound is involved in esophageal carcinogenesis. Duodenal juice reflux is what causes contact between duodenal contents—mainly bile acids and derivatives—including taurodeoxycholic acid, with esophageal mucosa. Taurodeoxycholic acid and the other duodenal components lead to oxidative stress, one of the general causes of neoplastic growth.
Of course, taurodeoxycholic acid has some beneficial effects as well. It’s been studied to prevent damage to sensory cells in the inner ear.
It’s been also reported that taurodeoxycholic acid aids the secretion of chloride ions through Ca-activated chloride ion channels and CFTR in the bronchi when applied basolaterally; for this reason, it might be included in the treatment of cystic fibrosis.
The deuterated form, Taurodeoxycholic Acid-d4, is intended for use as an internal standard for the quantification of taurodeoxycholic acid.
Avanti’s high-quality Taurodeoxycholic Acid-d4 product is available to purchase and incorporate in a variety of analytical projects.
