Deoxycholic acid-d4
5β-cholanic acid-3α,12α-diol (2,2,4,4-d4)
Deoxycholic Acid-d4 is the deuterated version of the bile acid (BA) deoxycholic acid. A deuterated compound is a compound in which a hydrogen atom has been replaced by a deuterium atom—one of the two stable isotopes of hydrogen.
Deoxycholic acid is a secondary bile acid with amphipathic molecules, soluble in acetic acid and alcohol. The BA is obtained from cholic acid as an end result of the intestinal microbiota metabolism. Deoxycholic acid can be conjugated with the amino acids glycine or taurine to form glycodeoxycholic acid and taurodeoxycholic acid, respectively.
Deoxycholic acid has a role as a human metabolite that is involved in the emulsification of fats for absorption in the intestines.
The compound is also included in a broad range of experimental analyses.
It has been investigated as a cholagogue to dissolve gallstones or prevent their formation.
The secondary BA also serves as a mild detergent for the isolation of membrane-associated proteins in various studies. This also makes deoxycholic acid useful for the production of outer membrane protein (OMP) vaccines.
Deoxycholic acid is proven to bind and activate the membrane enzyme NAPE-PLD. This enzyme catalyzes the release of N-acylethanolamines and endogenous cannabinoid anandamide. These are bioactive signaling molecules, involved in different physiological pathways such as pain and stress response, appetite, lifespan, and more.
Deoxycholic acid at a concentration of 0.2% is studied to inhibit and decrease the cytotoxicity of C. difficile.
Serum levels of deoxycholic acid are found to be increased in patients with colorectal cancer.
Deoxycholic acid derivatives are considered suitable for incorporation in nanotechnology. They also serve as photo-resistant components in microlithography.
The main use of deuterated Deoxycholic Acid-d4 is as an internal standard for the quantification of deoxycholic acid.
Avanti Research provides high-grade Deoxycholic Acid-d4 for studies on deoxycholic acid and other BAs.
