Cholic acid-d4
5ß-cholanic acid-3a,7a,12a-triol (2,2,4,4-d4)
Cholic Acid-d4 is the deuterated form of cholic acid, meaning that four hydrogen atoms from cholic acid have been replaced with deuterium atoms. Deuterium is used in place of hydrogen atoms to allow researchers greater capabilities in NMR and mass spectrometry studies.
Cholic acid is a major primary bile acid (BA), alongside chenodeoxycholic acid, and the two are present at roughly equal concentrations in humans. It is synthesized in liver hepatocytes from cholesterol catabolism, and its salts are known as cholates. Cholic acid can be further conjugated with the amino acid glycine to form glycocholic acid, or taurine, to create taurocholic acid, metabolic derivatives with specific functions in the human body. The compound is also transformed into deoxycholic acid by bacterial action in the intestines. This is why deoxycholic acid is defined as a secondary BA.
Cholic acid is a human metabolite with roles in different metabolic pathways.
The compound is also approved for use to treat both adults and children suffering from bile acid synthesis disorders, caused by single enzyme defects, as well as peroxisomal disorders. It might cause side effects, including diarrhea, nausea, acid reflux, jaundice, peripheral neuropathy, skin lesions, general malaise, etc.
In studies, cholic acid at a concentration of 0.1% is found to induce C. difficile colony in an agar dilution assay. It also increases cholesterol levels in the serum of rats.
The deuterated form of cholic acid, Cholic Acid-d4, is considered to aid fat absorption and cholesterol excretion.
Cholic Acid-d4 is also intended for use as an internal standard for the quantification of cholic acid.
Avanti Research offers quality and pure experimental Cholic Acid-d4 product for research development.
