Fluorinated Lipids

Fluorinated phospholipids have garnered attention for several decades due to their biological applications. Mono- and polyfluorinated phospholipids (one to four fluorine atoms) can be used as probes in FNMR studies to study biological molecules. These modified phospholipids are widely used due to the spectroscopic features associated with fluorine atoms and their similar properties to non-fluorinated parent phospholipids. Highly fluorinated phospholipids are primarily investigated and developed as possible drug-delivery devices and oxygen carriers. Fluorinated phospholipids are known to form vesicles/emulsions with increased stability and decreased toxicity.
